…the most important lessons on healthy eating that I’ve learned so far…
1. French Women know when to treat, when to savor, and when to back off.
In the book Why French Women Don’t Get Fat, she explains that french women know that somethings are worth the splurge. They plan for these indulgences and then moderate other meals and other portions. Don’t splurge on something that doesn’t completely thrill you!
2. Hara Hachi Bu
After reading The Blue Zones, I learned that in Okinawa, they have a saying, “Hara Hachi Bu.” It simply means eat until you are 80% full. They even say it at when they sit down to the table. They also eat with loved ones, slowly, and never on the go. That means no eating in the car or scarfing down a meal in five minutes. Know how to slow down and stop.
3. The only exercise I ever needed to do…
John was the maintenance man at my old apartment. My heat kept going out last winter, so we had a lot of time to chat. He told me that he used to weigh 300lbs! I said “wow! What kind of exercises did you do? ” He said this was the only exercise I ever needed to learn…. as he mimicked push food away with his hand. He knew that portion control is a big component to weight loss and for him it worked. He was active with his job. So I’m sure this played a roll too. But knowing to push away food was key! You are not wasting anything!
4. What works for Sally doesn’t always work for you!
Everyone’s body is different. We all have different genetics, different percentage of types of muscle fibers, different food intolerances, likes and dislikes…. You have to really give something a shot and then learn from it and try something else if it is not working. This means at least 4-6 weeks of a way of eating or exercise program before jumping on the next trend.
These lessons are easy to say but they mean nothing unless you put them to use! So I challenge you to choose one and try it out this month. What lessons have you learned? Do have something to share? I’d love to know more and maybe your lessons can help others. Please comment below!
